Place flowers in a clean, well sized vase, ensuring the vase is rinsed and cleaned to make sure no bacteria is left behind to potentially contaminate the flowers.
Then remove the packaging, recycling or reusing it and trim any leaves below the water level. This will prevent the growth of bacteria and keep the water clean.
Cut the flowers 1-2 inches from the ends of the stems at an angle which ensures the flowers are able to drink water and keep hydrated. If the flowers are not cut, they will be unable to absorb water.
Avoid placing flowers in direct sunlight or heated areas; this will cause the flowers to wilt. Further to avoid wilting, make sure you place them away from fruits as some fruits discharge ethylene gas which can prematurely age flowers.
